<ga:subjectLine>We're Listening!</ga:subjectLine>
<ga:textBody>A big "thank you" to everyone who supported the 5th annual statewide fairness gala, Out & About, this past weekend in Elizabethtown. It was a great evening for so many reasons. It not only provided the opportunity to celebrate the successes of this year, but also re-energize everyone for the work ahead. And, that is where we need your continued support!

Over the next few weeks, the Statewide Fairness Coalition of which Kentucky Fairness Alliance is a founding member will be holding listening sessions around the state to hear from - you - fair-minded Kentuckians! It's time to talk strategy with you given the importance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community being respected in public policy.

This series will start tomorrow evening in northern Kentucky. After this week, we'll begin geographically targeting messages for future listening sessions.

Northern Kentucky Listening Session
Thursday, November 19, 2009 - 7 p.m.
Campbell County Library, Newport Branch

We hope to see you at a listening session before the end of the year! 2010 can be a very good year for our community with your support.

In Fairness,
Your KFA Team!</ga:textBody>

<ga:textBody>The "Amper&and" Award recognizes an individual or institution that has made bold advances toward the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. This year's recipient is Louisville native and attorney David Tachau.

A partner at Tachau Meek PLC, Tachau has a long history of supporting inclusive civil and constitutional rights. Most recently, beginning in 2006, he took on injustice by representing KFA and others in stopping the Kentucky General Assembly from granting the University of the Cumberlands, a private, religion-based institution, $11 million to open a pharmacy school. The case is now on appeal before the Supreme Court of Kentucky, awaiting decision following oral arguments.

Join us in honoring this year's "Amper&and" Award recipient at Out & About in Elizabethtown on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Previous recipients include Governor Steven L. Beshear (2008) and the University of Louisville (2007).

Get your tickets online and by-pass waiting in line! http://www.kentuckyfairness.org/getinvolved/events/dinnerindex09.html
Tickets may be purchased online until 3:00 p.m. (EDT) on Nov. 14. Those purchased after Nov. 10 will be available at will call.

<ga:subjectLine>ENDA is Moving - Act Now!</ga:subjectLine>
<ga:textBody>ENDA IS HEATING UP & CONGRESS NEEDS TO HEAR FROM US!!

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act is moving quickly through both houses of Congress--but our contacts on Capitol Hill tell us they are not hearing enough from equality-minded people who support the bill, and that we do not yet have the votes needed to pass ENDA.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is scheduled to hold its hearing on ENDA this Thursday, November 5. The House of Representatives markup on ENDA is expected to take place as early as next week--and the full House will likely vote on ENDA before Thanksgiving.

So we must act quickly -- and we need your help. Contact your Representative and Senators immediately and urge them to support ENDA today and ask them to take swift action to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Our legislators must hear, loudly and clearly, that this bill is our top priority.

Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: (202) 224-3121. Give the operator your zip code and ask to be connected to your Representative. Then, after leaving your message, hang up and call again to be connected to your two Senators.

Suggested voicemail message: My name is _____ and a proud resident of (your city, state). I am calling to urge Representative/Senator to support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 3017/S. 1584), to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from job discrimination. Please take swift action to pass ENDA. I can be reached at _______ (provide your phone number). Thank you.

Or send an urgent email to your Representative and Senators by filling out the form and the button on the right.

It only takes a few minutes to make the calls or send the email, but the impact of your actions will touch lives for many years to come.</ga:textBody>

<ga:subjectLine>Kentuckians Support Fairness</ga:subjectLine>
<ga:textBody>Join us and other fair-minded Kentuckians on November 14 in Elizabethtown as we honor this year's recipient of our Community Service Award.

This year?s recipient is the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights (KCHR). As the state civil rights enforcement agency for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, it will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. In 2007, the KCHR hired John J. Johnson as its Executive Director. Soon after Johnson joined the Commission, he stated that principles of equality and fair dealing should protect all people and groups that have been historically discriminated against. Six months later, the Commission?s governing board unanimously adopted a resolution commending Governor Steven L. Beshear for adding sexual orientation and gender identity to Kentucky's equal employment opportunity policy for state employees. It further encouraged the passage of a Statewide Fairness Law. Three months later, Gov. Beshear appointed four new commissioners to the KCHR and designated new member George W. Stinson as Chair. Within four months of Stinson's appointment, the Commission reaffirmed its position in support of a Statewide Fairness Law. Later, when faced with a legislative threat to fairness known in the state during the 2009 General Assembly as Senate Bill 68, which would ban LGBT couples from adopting children and/or serving as foster parents, the Commission once again acted unanimously in opposing the bill. Senate bill 68 met an unexpected demise at the hands of Senate Leadership, and there is no record on the Legislative Research Commission website of a committee vote on the bill. Earlier this year, the Commission became the first state government agency in Kentucky to hold a public hearing to discuss discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. It was held in Richmond where efforts are progressing to pass a local fairness ordinance.

Will you join us in honoring the Commission's hardwork? RSVP and Get Your Tickets Today! http://www.kentuckyfairness.org/getinvolved/events/dinnerindex09.html

<ga:textBody>3-2-1 Countdown for Equality: No Bittersweet Victories

Help Washington, Maine and Kalamazoo Win on November 3rd:
Blog About the Campaigns-Today, Make Remote Calls, Donate

Progressives are closer than ever to a victory on health care reform. As 2009 comes to a close, we've moved forward on other issues. But what's looming up ahead could be a disappointment.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009--less than a week away-- there will be critical votes on on LGBT equality in three states: Washington State, Maine, and Michigan. With so much attention devoted to other issues in the political realm, bloggers have banded together to ensure we don't forget the ones with a firm deadline next week.

For that reason, we've joined with these three campaigns to put together a summary of who, what, and how. If you haven't heard of these campaigns, and/or haven't done anything yet to support them, please consider helping out. If you are a blogger please feel free to grab this content whole cloth and use it for your blog posts.

Last year, as Obama and Democrats were winning across the country, we lost marriage equality in California. It was a bittersweet victory. Pitch in to make sure 2009 isn't a bittersweet year. Take action to support LGBT equality TODAY.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington:
Who we are: Approve Referendum 71 is the campaign to preserve domestic partnerships in Washington State. By voting to approve, voters retain the domestic partnership laws that were passed during this year's legislative session, including using sick leave to care for a partner, adoption rights, insurance rights, and more.

What we need: We need phone bankers to get our supporters out to vote. Washington is an all mail-in ballot state, and we need to ensure our supporters put their ballots in the mail. Also, youth turnout is a critical component of our campaign, and youth turnout historically drops in off-year elections. So we need a lot of help to turn them out.

How you do it: Go to http://approvereferendum71.org/phonehome? to sign up to make remote calls for Approve 71. We'll then contact you for a training, and you can make GOTV calls.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maine:

Who we are: The No On 1/Protect Maine Equality campaign is working to protect Maine's recently-passed law legalizing marriage equality for same-sex couples. Our opponents have put the issue on the ballot for Nov 3, 2009. Because of Maine's early voting election laws, people are already voting at the polls, so we need help immediately to turn out our side at the polls.

What we need: We need you to devote a few hours to Call for Equality. Call for Equality is a virtual phonebank set up so that you can call Maine voters wherever you are. Much of Maine is rural, where canvassing isn't effective, so we need to reach these voters- along with other supporters- by phone. All you need is a phone and internet connection. No experience required! We'll provide the training, and all you need is a a few hours to help get a win in Maine.

How you do it: Go here http://www.protectmaineequality.org/callforequality? to sign up for a training and your shift. There are lots of times available for your convenience.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kalamazoo, MI:

Who We Are: The Yes on Ordinance 1856 / One Kalamazoo campaign is working in Michigan to support the City Commission of Kalamazoo's twice approved ordinance for housing, employment, and public accommodation protections for gay and transgender residents. Opponents forced a public referendum on the ordinance so dedicated local volunteers, led by former Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jon Hoadley, are working to ensure voters say YES to fairness and equality and keep Ordinance 1856.

Why The Urgency: In the final weeks, the opposition has gone all out with aggressive disinformation and misleading red herrings to try to defeat the ordinance. This includes signs that say "No to Discrimination" (even though voting No actually supports continued discrimination of GLBT residents), transphobic door hangers and fliers, and now radio ads that falsely suggest that criminal behavior will become legal when this simply isn't true. The Yes on Ordinance 1856 supporters are better organized but many voters who want to vote for gay and transgender people are getting confused by the opposition.

How To Help:

1) Help the One Kalamazoo campaign raise a final $10,000 specifically dedicated to fight back against the lies on the local TV and radio airwaves and fully fund the campaign's final field and GOTV efforts. Give by going to: http://www.actblue.com/page/3-2-1-countdown?

2) If you live nearby and can physically volunteer in Kalamazoo sign up here: http://onekalamazoo.com/countdown? If you know anyone that lives in Kalamazoo, use the One Kalamazoo campaign's online canvass tool to remind those voters that they need to vote on November 3rd and vote YES on Ordinance 1856 to support equality for gay and transgender people. Click here to contact voters using the online canvass tool: http://www.onekalamazoo.com/tellfriends2?</ga:textBody>

<ga:subjectLine>What A Week!</ga:subjectLine>
<ga:textBody>It has certainly been a good week for fairness!

Incase you missed it, on Wednesday U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced plans to create the first national resource center for aging lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. It will assist in meeting the needs and concerns for older LGBT people and those caring for them.

Also, on Wednesday U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan announced a series of proposed rule changes to make housing programs blind as they relate to a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. The changes would, among other things, clarify the term "family" and ensure that any FHA-insured mortgage loans be based on credit-related factors and not linked to orientation or gender identity

Today, the U.S. Senate passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act marking a memorable day in our country's history. The measure previously passed the U.S. House of Representatives and now heads to President Obama for signature.

"The passage of an inclusive hate crimes bill by the U.S. Congress is a great step for fairness across our country. President Obama should move quickly to sign this historic legislation and make it the law of the land," said Jody Cofer, KFA Board member. "While Kentucky hate crimes law references orientation, a portion of the LGBT community is passed over. This federal legislation brings our transgender brothers and sisters into the tent. Sadly, prejudices still sometimes lead to awful criminal acts - it's time for federal statute to acknowledge and curb that."

All of this is great news for fair-minded Kentuckians, but more work remains and it will not get any easier. Are you ready to keep moving forward? If so, share the great news of this week with your friends & family and have them join KFA today!

In Fairness,
Your KFA Team

<ga:textBody>Join the Kentucky Fairness Alliance and the University of Louisville, Office for GLBT Services as we present the moving adoption documentary "We Are Dad" on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Chao Auditorium.

With the recent push aimed at denying Kentucky's children a loving home simply based upon the marital status, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity of the parents, "We Are Dad" provides a refreshing model for how these families can succeed and live just like any other family.

"We Are Dad" is a must-see film that, according to Out.com, will take you "into the daily lives of this very remarkable family. The result is a powerful bit of activist filmmaking."

Watch "We Are Dad" at 7:00 PM in the Chao Auditorium of Ekstrom Library at the University of Louisville. A panel discussion will follow with Chris Hartman, Director of the Fairness Campaign, Michael Aldridge, Executive Director of the ACLU of Kentucky, and Travis Myles, Board Chairperson of the Kentucky Fairness Alliance.

<ga:textBody>Millions of people listened to President Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress on health care reform. Now it's time for LGBT people to help make health care reform a reality. This is our issue. LGBT people have less coverage because our relationships are not recognized. We have less access to quality, affordable care.

Tell Congress to bring stability to those of us who have insurance, offer secure coverage to LGBT people who don't have insurance now, and bring down skyrocketing health care costs.

Let's get this broken system fixed. Contact your Senators and Congressional Represenative now!
